A court handed Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis a victory after dismissing a lawsuit filed by media giant Disney over the company’s objections to its parental rights legislation.

Disney filed the lawsuit against Florida officials in March 2022 after the company lost special district privilege when the company criticized DeSantis over the passage of the Parental Rights in Education Act. Popular legislation restricted controversial books related to gender and sexuality from being available to children in public schools.

Disney’s then-CEO called the bill a “challenge on basic human rights,” and lawmakers responded by revoking the company’s special status over the district surrounding its theme parks. The lawsuit alleged that the government action was retaliatory and violated free speech rights.
