The presence of antisemitism on college campuses has become an increasingly troubling issue in recent years, and has exploded since October 7th of last year. Incidents ranging from discriminatory rhetoric to outright violence have made it clear that some major universities are failing to provide a safe and inclusive environment for Jewish students. While the Ivy League schools like Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Penn have been among the worst, there are many other private and state universities where Jew hatred is rampant. As an often targeted minority, Jewish people have historically faced and overcome significant adversity. Now, it is imperative that we strategically allocate our resources to institutions that genuinely support and celebrate our contributions, while providing safe environments for students, professors, and administrators. It’s time for Jewish students to prioritize enrolling in universities where they are welcomed and valued, such as the University of Florida and other schools in both the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). By doing so, Jewish communities can foster environments that promote their safety, academic success, and cultural heritage.

The Rise of Antisemitism on Major Campuses

In recent years, antisemitic incidents on college campuses have been on the rise. The past 9 months have been almost unbearable for Jews at major universities – primarily in the northeast and western parts of the United States. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in educational institutions, with hate speech, vandalism, and physical attacks becoming alarmingly common. This hostile environment severely impacts Jewish students' well-being, academic performance, and overall college experience. Institutions that fail to address these issues adequately not only compromise the safety of Jewish students but also perpetuate a culture of intolerance and exclusion. These are the same institutions that proudly talk about their DEI programs – the ones that exclude Jews.

The Case for the University of Florida and SEC Schools

Contrary to the hostile environments found on some campuses, the University of Florida, under the exemplary leadership of President Ben Sasse, and other schools in the SEC and ACC have consistently demonstrated their commitment to fostering a safe and welcoming atmosphere for Jewish students. These institutions have robust Jewish communities, active Chabad Houses, and numerous resources dedicated to supporting Jewish life on campus. For instance, the University of Florida boasts one of the largest Hillel centers in the country, offering a wide range of religious, cultural, and social activities that enrich the Jewish student experience.

Similarly, other SEC and ACC schools, such as the University of Georgia, Clemson, Florida State, and Vanderbilt University, have strong Jewish communities and support systems. These institutions recognize the value of diversity and actively work to ensure that Jewish students feel safe and included. By choosing to attend such universities, Jewish students can thrive in an environment that respects and celebrates their identity.

The Importance of Strategic Resource Allocation

Jewish communities possess considerable resources including, academic talent, a rich cultural heritage, and including financial capital. It is crucial to leverage these assets strategically to empower institutions that support and value Jewish students. By prioritizing universities like the University of Florida and SEC schools, Jewish families and organizations can reinforce the importance of creating inclusive and safe environments. This strategic allocation of resources can take several forms:

  1. Financial Support: Jewish philanthropists and organizations should consider directing their donations to universities that demonstrate a genuine commitment to supporting Jewish life on campus. This financial support can fund scholarships, cultural events, and facilities that enhance the Jewish student experience.
  2. Community Engagement: Jewish alumni and community leaders can actively engage with supportive universities by mentoring students, participating in campus events, and advocating for policies that promote inclusivity. This engagement can strengthen the bond between the Jewish community and the university, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship.
  3. Academic Collaboration: Jewish academics and professionals can collaborate with universities that support Jewish students to develop programs, courses, and research initiatives that highlight Jewish contributions to various fields. This academic collaboration can enhance the university's reputation and provide valuable learning opportunities for all students.
Empowerment Through Excellence

Jewish people have historically been recognized as one of the most overachieving minorities in history. Their contributions to science, arts, business, and other fields are unparalleled. This tradition of excellence should not be compromised by attempting to fit into environments that are hostile or indifferent to their identity. Instead, Jewish students should seek out institutions that celebrate their heritage and provide the support they need to succeed. Continuing to support places like Harvard, Columbia, Penn, or MIT will only perpetuate the problem.

By concentrating their resources on supportive universities, Jewish communities can create a positive feedback loop. As Jewish students excel academically and professionally, they enhance the reputation of their institutions, attracting more Jewish students and resources. This cycle of empowerment can help create a network of universities that are not only safe and welcoming for Jewish students but also renowned for their academic excellence and cultural diversity.

In the face of rising antisemitism on many major college campuses, it is crucial for Jewish students and their families to strategically allocate their resources to institutions that genuinely support and celebrate their contributions. The University of Florida and other SEC schools offer a safe and welcoming environment where Jewish students can thrive. By prioritizing these universities, Jewish communities can foster environments that promote safety, academic success, and cultural heritage. Through strategic resource allocation, Jewish people can empower the institutions that support them, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
