WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A new state law aimed at protecting our children went into effect on July 1, 2023.
The state law, called “enforcement of school zone speed limits” allows cities or counties to install speed-detection cameras in school zones. Those cameras would automatically generate tickets during school days.
Right now, West Palm Beach along with several other cities in our area does not have the automated cameras, but according to the West Palm Beach Police Department spokesperson, Mike Jachles, speeding is a major problem in our area.
“We see it all the time– within seconds of a school zone being instituted we saw one driver moving at a very high rate of speed through there, not 5 or 10 miles over-but likely 20 or more miles over,” said Jachles.
