Because of a funding shortfall of more than $700 million in Palm Beach County's budget, several capital-improvement projects — from parks to athletic centers, from an animal shelter to a bridge — may either be delayed or canceled altogether.
County commissioners received the bad news about the shortfalls on Tuesday, when their staff disclosed that project costs were coming in at two to three times what was budgeted.
Budget officials said a perfect storm of high inflation, supply-chain issues and a decline in impact fees were behind the increases. Other governments in Florida are coping with similar cost increases.
