Schoolchildren throughout Palm Beach County paraded outside Monday afternoon armed with disposable glasses and a taste of celestial wonder.
They followed the advice of their science and math teachers to look through their glasses and straight up at the sun as the solar eclipse began. Seeing the rare event inspired some students to think forward to the next eclipse and where they hope to be in their lives 20 years from now.
At Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, more than 1,000 students in grades four through 12 met on the football field to watch the event. They ran and cartwheeled through the grass and compared their glasses (provided by the school) to their own sunglasses.
Jim Scheidegger, a math teacher at the school, began planning for the event in November and reveled in the energy on the football field on Monday afternoon. He'd given talks to students of all ages about what happens during a solar eclipse and how to see it. When the big moment came, he adjusted his tie with a print of the moon on it and looked skyward.
